How do users use websites?

The Back Button is one of the most important Web buttons on any Web site, however, usually Web developers don't think of it when they're building their sites. In fact, it's very common to see "back to home" or "back to start" or just "back" links incorporated into the pages that they are designing. But unless these links have built in intelligence that is informed for sure where the user was before to clicking them (similar to the software back arrow), then these links are simply a sham - a guess at the path that the user made over your site.

How Most Users Browse the Web
Most people come to a Web page and glide. If it doesn't appear to be what they needed to study or had to read about, they move on. And the quickest route out of any Web page is, you guessed it, the Back Arrow.
In fact, a lot of people don't even know they're doing it. They look through a Web page with their mouse hovering around the scroll-bar, just in case they need to scroll down. Then, unless something particularly interesting comes along, they rise their mouse up to the upper left corner of the browser and go back to their last location.
Make the Back Button Your Friend
  • Locate your logo up near the back button While most users don't necessarily need to look when they're clicking back, locating your brand close by will get it more attention while they leave.
  • Make items in that corner clickable The brand has to be clickable, but other text elements that are in the upper left corner of your site should contain links as well. That way, in case they miss the back arrow, they might go some other useful area on your page.
  • Use server logs to determine where they came from If you have information on what they're going back to, you can locate the link right on your site, maybe even with altering elements that strictly appear when the users come from specific location. For instance, someone coming from a search engine will not know the best ways to browse your site. If you mention instructions like how to search through the site when they arrive from Google engine they might want to stay longer.
