The principles of web layouts

When you create a Web design, one of the most forgotten aspects of the design is the layout. Yes, many people think about how to create a layout (CSS, tables, frames, etc.), but the basics of Web layout are commonly completely forgotten.

Space and Whitespace
Use the whole space, but don't be too strict with it. That means, use relatively sized layout parts on your Web pages, so that they can be resized to fit the browser window.
Remember about the resolution. While the most people have switched from 640x480 sized monitors, keep that in mind when you're designing. Having customers leave because all that is visible is a title on their monitor is poor customer service.
Use color to separate different blocks. If you need a page of a specific width, why not center it in the browsed window and apply a different background color to the rest of the page. This will make your page appear to scale for different browsers; larger browsers will simply have more background color, and smaller windows will contain less or none showing.

What to do about graphics
Align your graphics. One of the most typical newbie layout mistakes is to slap images into a page without considering your layout scheme. If you simply use an img tag and then put some text to follow it, you'll get the picture and then one line of text to the right of it. Using the align attribute will help incorporate graphics into layout.
Match the images and paragraphs on a page. It's easy to captived with lots of graphics and animations, but they can turn you page into a very hard to read one. When you're considering your layout, don't forget that images are a vital part of the design, not just afterthoughts.

Text Alignment
Put in some thought about text width. This is often named the "scan length", and refers to how many words are displayed on one line. In general people can effortlessly read about 7 to 11 words on a line. Longer lines make your text hard to read, shorter than that and it's disjointed and distracting. When creating your layouts be certain that the main text is displayed in a comfortably readable width.
Centering paragraphs is not recommended. One of the easiest layout tricks that a new designer gets familiar with is the center tag, and they center everything on their sites. However, centering is very hard to do good and it's often hard to read.
