How do people use websites?

The Back Button is probably the most widely used browser icon on any Web page, and yet usually Web developers don't think of it when they're creating their sites. In fact, it's very common to see "back to home" or "back to start" or just "back" links incorporated into the pages that they are designing. But if this links don't have a built in intelligence that is informed for sure where the customer was before they clicked (similar to the browser back button), then these links are simply a sham - a guess at the path that the customer took over your site.

The Way Most People Surf the Web
The majority of people get to a Web site and glide. If it doesn't look like what they wanted to study or needed to read about, they move on. And the quickest route out of any Web page iscertainly the Back Arrow.
In fact, most users don't even realize they're doing it. They look through a Web site with their mouse hovering over the scroll-bar, just in case they need to scroll the page. Then, if nothing really interesting appears, they rise their mouse up to the upper left side of the window and return to their last location.
Take Advantage of the Back Button
  • Locate your branding close to the back arrow As most users don't really need to look when they're pressing back, locating your brand close by will bring it more attention while they leave.
  • Make objects in that area clickable Your brand should be a link, but other text objects located in the upper left area of your page have to be clickable also. That way, if they miss the back arrow, they will go some other useful area on your site.
  • Use server logs to find out where they came from when you know what they're returning to, you are able to locate the link right on your site, maybe even with dynamic elements that strictly appear when they arrive from specific location. For example, someone coming from Google will not know the best ways to search your site. If you mention details on how to navigate through the site when they come from a search engine you might get them to stay longer.
