The Difference Between Web and Print

Many Web designers come to the Web with a print experience. They were either print designers, or they are simply used to the manage that a print world gives. At the time print a project, it provides permanence and stability. You don't have this on the Web.
The thing is, that it's really easy to forget. When you build your Web site and have a trial run in your browser, you produce it looking exactly the way you like it to look. However, then you have a trial in a different browser, and it looks different. And if you switch to another platform, it will appear differently again.
As you're a designer, you have to work with users. You will not be doing them and yourself a favor if you don't understand the how print and Web are different. Especially if you bring your portfolio as print outs. This is a common problem, where the customer expects the printout to represent exactly what the page will look like.
Things To Do
Working with Customers
  • Printouts for your Portfolio It is very helpful to create a portfolio, however, consider that the Web is different from print, and including a printout is not a strong example of your Web site design skills.
  • Defining Goals Be fair with your customers. If they like their site to have one specific layout, font, and images, be sure to explain the faults of it such as download speed and editing prior to simply making them a completely graphical site.
  • Know what the customer uses If happen to be a large Firefox or Mac addict, and your client only works with Internet Explorer for Windows, you should remember in your project. Your page could look very different to them.
Design Tips
  • Study your audience Know the characteristics of the users of the site you're designing. If they are geeks, they might run Unix on a 21 inch monitor. Or if they are more conservative they might own a 12 inch monitor running Internet Explorer 3. If you design a site that works for your audience, your customer won't come complaining to you later.
  • Run the tests try your designs in every browser and OS combo that you manage to get your hands on. Emulators are fine if you don't have other choice, but there is no substitute for a life experience.
  • Don't forget resolution Software and platforms are significant, but if your users and customers are working on a smaller monitor than you use, they will be disappointed
