How do people use websites?

The Back Arrow is probably the most important browser buttons on any Web page, and yet usually Web developers don't consider it when they're creating their sites. Actually, it's very common to see "back to home" or "back to start" or simply "back" links embedded into the content that they are designing. However unless these links have built in intelligence that knows exactly where the customer was before they clicked (similar to the browser back button), then these links are just a scam - a guess at the way that the user took through your site.

The Way Most People Surf the Web
Most users get to a Web site and skim. If it doesn't appear to be what they needed to study or had to read about, they leave. And the quickest way out of any Web site iscertainly the Back Button.
Actually, most users don't even know they're doing so. They look through a Web page with their cursor hovering over the scroll-bar, just in case they have to scroll the page. Then, if nothing particularly interesting comes along, they rise their cursor up to the upper left corner of the browser and go back to their last location.
Take Advantage of the Back Button
  • Place your branding up near the back button As the majority of users don't really have to look while they're pressing back, placing your brand up there will bring it more attention when they leave.
  • Create objects in that corner clickable Your brand has to be a link, but the rest text objects located in the upper left area of your page have to be clickable as well. Therefore, if they don't hit the back arrow, they will go some other useful area on your page.
  • Use server history to find out where they arrive from when you have information on what they're going back to, you are able to address that right on your page, maybe even with altering elements that only appear when they come from specific location. For example, a user coming from a search engine will not know the most efficient ways to browse your site. If you include details on how to search on the pages when they come from a search engine they might want to stay longer.
