How do people navigate the Web?

The Back Button is probably the most widely used Web icon on any Web site, however, most Web developers don't think of it when they're building their sites. In fact, very often I notice "back to home" or "back to start" or just "back" links incorporated into the content that they are developing. But unless these links have built in intelligence that is informed exactly where the user was prior they clicked (similar to the software back button), then these links are just a sham - a guess at the way that the user made through your site.

The Way Most People Surf the Web
Most people get to a Web site and glide. If it doesn't look like what they needed to study or needed to read about, they leave. And the fastest route out of a Web page is, you guessed it, the Back Arrow.
Actually, most people don't even know they're doing it. They sit at a Web page with their cursor moving around the scroll-bar area, just in case they need to scroll down. Then, if nothing really interesting appears, they pull their cursor up to the upper left side of the browser and return to their previous location.
Take Advantage of the Back Button
  • Place your logo close to the back arrow As most people don't really have to look when they're clicking back, locating your brand close by will bring it more attention while they leave.
  • Create items in that area clickable Your logo has to be clickable, but other text objects that are in the upper left area of your page should contain links also. Therefore, in case they miss the back button, they will get to somewhere else useful on your page.
  • Use server history to find out where they arrive from If you have information on what they're returning to, you are able to locate the link right on your site, perhaps even with dynamic elements that strictly appear when they come from that location. For instance, a user coming from Google might not know the most efficient ways to search your site. If you include details on how to navigate through the site when they arrive from a search engine you might get them to stay longer.
