How do people navigate websites?

The Back Button is one of the most widely used browser icon on any Web page, however, most Web designers don't consider it while they're building their pages. In fact, very often I see "back to home" or "back to start" or just "back" links built into the pages that they are developing. However unless these links have built in logic that knows for sure where the user was prior they clicked (like the browser back arrow), then these links are just a sham - a guess at the way that the user took through your site.

How Most People Browse the Web
Most users come to a Web site and skim. If it doesn't seem to be what they wanted to study or needed to read about, they move on. And the fastest way out of any Web site iscertainly the Back Button.
In fact, most users don't even know they're doing it. They look through a Web page with their mouse moving over the scroll-bar, just in case they have to scroll down. Then, unless something really interesting comes along, they rise their mouse up to the upper left corner of the browser and go back to their previous location.
Take Advantage of the Back Button
  • Locate your branding up near the back arrow While most people don't really need to look when they're clicking back, locating your brand up there will bring it more attention while they leave.
  • Make objects in that corner clickable The brand has to be a link, but the rest text elements located in the upper left corner of your page have to contain links also. That way, in case they miss the back button, they will go some other useful area on your page.
  • See server history to find out where they arrive from If you have information on what they're returning to, you are able to address that right on your page, perhaps even with altering elements that strictly appear when they arrive from that location. For example, someone coming from Google might not know the most efficient ways to search your site. If you include details on how to search on the pages when they arrive from a search engine they might want to stay longer.
