How do users use websites?

The Back Arrow is one of the most important Web icon on any Web page, however, most Web developers don't consider it when they're creating their sites. In fact, very often I notice "back to home" or "back to start" or simply "back" links built into the content that they are designing. However unless these links have built in logic that knows exactly where the customer was prior they clicked (similar to the software back arrow), then these links are simply a scam - a guess at the path that the user made through your site.

How Most Users Browse the Web
The majority of users get to a Web site and glide. If it doesn't look like what they wanted to study or needed to read about, they move on. And the fastest way out of any Web page iscertainly the Back Button.
In fact, a lot of people don't even realize they're doing it. They sit at a Web site with their cursor hovering around the scroll-bar, just in case they need to scroll down. Then, if nothing particularly interesting comes along, they rise their mouse up to the upper left corner of the window and return to their last location.
Make the Back Button Your Friend
  • Place your logo up near the back button As the majority of people don't really need to look when they're pressing back, placing your brand close by will get it more attention while they move away.
  • Create items in that corner clickable The brand has to be clickable, but other text elements that are in the upper left area of your site should contain links as well. That way, if they miss the back button, they will go some other useful area on your page.
  • See server logs to determine where they arrive from when you know what they're returning to, you can address that right on your site, maybe even with dynamic elements that only appear when they come from that location. For instance, someone coming from Google will not know the best ways to search your site. If you mention instructions like how to search on the pages when they come from Google engine you might get them to stay longer.
